Joseph lived in Canaan with his family. Joseph's father was Jacob, who was a son Issac and grandson of Abraham. Joseph's mother was Rachael who died after having Benjamin. Jacob had twelve sons and a daughter, Joseph was the eleventh son. Joseph was Jacobs favourite son. Non of the other brothers liked Joseph because he would always tell Jacob what bad things they did. One day Jacob gave Joseph a magnificent coat made with a huge variety of different colours. This was Josephs amazing Technicolor coat. All the other brothers were jealous and hated Joseph even more.
One night Joseph woke all his brother up to tell them about a dream he had. Joseph said "we were out in the field trying up corn when everyone's sheaves of corn bowed down to mine". Josephs brothers were very angry with Joseph but they ignored them. Another night Joseph woke his brothers up again to tell them about another dream he had had. "The sun, moon and eleven stars bowed down to me, like a was a king", this time even his dad was angry at Joseph and he told him not to say things like that again. The next day Jacob asked Joseph to go with his brothers into the fields to look after the animals. However, Josephs brothers had planned to kill Joseph but the eldest brother, Reuben persuaded them not too and instead they through Joseph into a pit. They then covered Josephs coat in goats blood and took it to Jacob. They told him that Joseph was killed by one of the animals. Jacob was devastated. Meanwhile, Joseph was sold into slavery in Egypt. He was sold for 20 silver coins. He was a slave to a rich man called Potiphar. Joseph worked very hard and became in charge of the other slaves and the Potiphar's house. Joseph soon got into trouble. Surprisingly, it wasn't his fault! Joseph had upset the Potiphar's wife so she had made up lies about him so he got put in prison. Whilst Joseph was staying there to other men were also put in prison. They both worked for the Pharaoh. The two men were both having strange dreams so Joseph explained to them what they meant. Later one of the men were freed so they went to the Pharaoh and told him about Joseph. The Pharaoh was recently having strange dreams so the he asked Joseph to explain his dream. One of the Pharaohs dream was about seven fat cows coming out of the Nile followed by seven thin cows. The thins cows then ate the fat cows. In another dream seven thin sheaves of corn ate seven fat sheaves of corn. Joseph said that the Pharaohs dreams meant that there would be seven years of good harvest in Egypt and there would be lots to eat. Unfortunately seven bad years would follow and nothing would grow. Joseph advised the Pharaoh to store lots of corn before the seven bad years came, this way they wouldn't starve. When all this happened like Joseph said he was made Governor. Although in Canaan everyone was starving and had nothing to eat. So Jacob sent his sons to Egypt to buy lots of corn. When they were there they did not recognise Joseph and they told him all about their family. Joseph accused them of being spies! To prove they weren't they had to go back to get the youngest son, meanwhile Simeon stayed in prison. The brother returned to Egypt with Benjamin, the youngest and Simeon was free. On the way home with the corn a horseman stopped the brothers and said they stole the masters silver cup. They found the cup in Benjamin's sack. Although, this was Josephs plan. Joseph did this to see if his brothers had changed whilst he'd been away. So when Benjamin was arrested Joseph said you must be slave to him. Judah, the brother who sold Joseph volunteered be Josephs slave so Benjamin would be free. Joseph was so happy to see his brothers had changed. He told them to get Jacob and to move to Egypt where everyone can be happy. |
